Jay Fogle, DDS
For his undergraduate studies, Dr. Fogle received a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Psychology at the University of Washington. He then went on to earn his DDS from the University of Washington School of Dentistry, where he met his wife, Dr. Danielle Juarez. After Dental School he recieved advanced training earning the prestigious Advanced Education in General Dentistry Certificate.
Dr. Jay Fogle is a dentist who likes to help people: his patients and also people around the Northwest and the world who seldom have access to proper dental care. Along with his wife, Dr. Juarez, he has volunteered his time and skills to bring dental care to those in need in the Northwest, in Mexico and in Uganda. Being able to help people is the main reason why Dr. Fogle became a dentist.
Dr. Fogle was born in Bremerton and grew up on the Kitsap Peninsula, including graduating from North Kitsap High School. Growing up in this area has led Jay to be a person of the great outdoors. Any free time he has is most likely spent doing something outside: golfing, gardening, fishing, hiking or just playing with his family and dog. Family is very important to Jay, something instilled in him at an early age by his parents.
Dr. Fogle’s dad was a pediatric dentist in the Kitsap area. Jay spent time around his office growing up, but he wasn’t being groomed to be a dentist prodigy, he mainly pulled weeds outside or spent time filing charts. So it wasn’t preordained that Jay would become a dentist. However, he knew he liked to help people, and he liked working with his hands, and his dad showed a good example of how to do both in a career, so dentistry seemed a good fit for him.
For his undergraduate studies, Dr. Fogle received a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Psychology at the University of Washington. He then went on to earn his 4 year DDS degree from the University of Washington Dental School, where he met his wife, Dr. Danielle Juarez. He then spent a year interning in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the Indian Health Services Clinic.
During his time in Dental School, Jay volunteered his budding dental skills at a homeless clinic in Wallingford. Then after graduation, Dr. Fogle and Dr. Juarez joined the Flying Samaritans, a non-profit volunteer group which sent them to Mexico several times to provide dental care for the poor. They both enjoyed the satisfaction of volunteering so much they started their own non-profit organization, 32 Pearls of Hope, which strives to improve the quality of life for children neglected by society by promoting sustainable access to quality oral health care through outreach, education and mobilization of local communities. As part of 32 Pearls, both dentists traveled to Uganda in East Africa. There is a dental school there which they traveled to in order to observe, but they were soon asked to be instructors. This lead to creating an exchange program between the Ugandan Dental School and the UW Dental School, where books, materials, instructors and students can go back and forth between the two dental schools in order to broaden everybody’s view of dentistry and view of providing care to people. Dr. Fogle says of his trip to Uganda, “It was just an eye opening trip, it was so great to be in Africa doing dentistry. We went to a couple of very small villages outside the capital city and did exams, cleanings and emergency care on 60 or so kids, ages 8 to 12.” It was such a fulfilling and satisfying experience that, “it reinforced my belief that I made the right choice to go into dentistry to help other people because it’s something that is realistic for me to do. I realize that I can’t change the world but I can help one person at a time, so maybe I’ll help the person who changes the world.”
